Nightlife and Entertainment

Find out some of the places to enjoy theatre and the arts and where you can dance the night away.

Dance Clubs

The one thing all "Capies" share is a passion for dancing almost every night away.

For the younger set, experience a dance party that lasts all night at the Gallery.
Experience the vibe of the Green Point Mile. A collection of gay clubs, bars and restaurants.
Visit the township clubs for an interesting mix of Jazz, Swing and Kwaito.

Situated on the periphery of the city centre, The Gallery is Cape Town's number one destination for hard house fans. "Get down 'n dance" clubbing at its best, this is a popular venue for an all-night dance experience.

Cape Town has a thriving gay entertainment scene. The "Green Point Mile" has a variety of clubs and bars that cater for all needs and occasions. Here you'll find clubs that serve up sexy, funky house tunes that night after night guarantee unforgettable dance experiences. Others still, offer change in mood and music that persevere all the way to sunrise.

If a more mixed, inner city scene is more your thing, there is no shortage of clubs that focus on more sultry, funky house tunes designed with the tastes of a more urbane and varied crowd.

Throughout Cape Town and the Western Cape you will find a club in every town, village and suburb - each destination varying according to the crowd being catered to. From the Swing and Kwaito sounds of the townships to the Jazz and Funk sounds of the suburbs, rest assured, there really is something for everyone.

Clubs open around 10pm and close with the departure of the last dancer. Guides to all the hottest and most happening venues are a feature of most local magazines and newspapers.

Theatre

Right up there with fine food, world class wines and super sounds, theatre in the Cape is not so much a recreation as it is a way of life.

Experience the splendor of the Artscape Complex. Some of the world's top shows have found their way to these floors.
See some great local theatre at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch.
See Shakespeare under the stars at the annual Maynardville Bard festival.
Visit Stellenbosch for good local wine, great scenery and cutting edge experimental theatre.
Enjoy a four day festival at the Knysna Pink Loerie Festival.

While playing host to international stars the Western Cape is a prolific producer of talents in command of genres from cultural drama, through cutting edge comedy all the way to cross-dressing cabaret.
Cape Town's major theatre destinations are the Artscape Complex, situated in the city centre, and The Baxter Theatre situated 10 minutes from the centre of Cape Town. The Artscape complex, with its world class technical prowess and vast, lavishly appointed auditoriums, is home mostly to larger, more flamboyant spectacles like Le Misrable and Phantom of the Opera.

The multitudes for whom the "Bard" is best, need look no further than Maynardville. Uniquely "Cape" in every sense, this annual open-air production takes on a different Shakespearian classic each year - under the stars the Bard breathes new life. Sound like your kind of Midsummer Night's Dream?

Moving further afield, Stellenbosch is not only known for its quality wines and architectural treasures, but also for its long association with cutting edge, experimental theatre. A myriad of venues populate this centuries old student town.

At the picturesque town of Darling about an hour from Cape Town, you'll find both the residence and stage home of South Africa's world-famous satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys. Named after his famous character Evita Bezuidenhout, Evita Se Perron (Evita's Platform), occupies the converted old Darling railway station. Watch the media for Evita Se Perron?s latest offering.

At the lagoon resort of Knysna on the Cape Garden Route, an annual celebration of Gay culture, the "Pink Loerie Festival", is a four-day jamboree of theatre, art, crafts and lots of partying. It all happens in the merry month of May.
